A salt water pool system is an electrolytic cell that is installed in line with the pool plumbing.
Salt is added to the pool water to obtain a low level concentration and, as the saline pool water passes through the electrolytic cell, chlorine is produced.
The chlorine then breaks down into salt and is continuously regenerated. The addition of more salt is needed only due to bather splash out and dilution by rain.
The level of salt used by the system is very low and most people barely notice it.
One of the benefits of this system is that, because chlorine is being produced continuously at a very low level, the irritation associated with higher chlorine levels from weekly chlorination is eliminated.
As the water passes through the cell it is "shocked",burning off the bad "combined" chlorine's that are often associated with swimmer irritation and potential algae problems.
For those who like to keep their pool heated, the salt system allows the service technician to eliminate the need to run higher chlorine levels as he tries to overcompensate for the residual lost due to the "gassing" off of the chlorine caused by heated water.
Probably the one aspect of the system that people love the most is the silky feeling that the low salt level gives to the water. The most common remark heard from owners of the system is that the water feels smoother and more luxurious and that the lingering chlorine smell is gone.
In the past, salt systems had been very expensive and cost prohibitive to most people. New advances in technology have made the systems affordable to everybody. You too can now begin to get more enjoyment from your pool.
